Festival d'Aix-en-Provence

Festival international d'art lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence · Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur · France

Aix stages opera in the open-air courtyard of the former archbishop's palace and in the modern Grand Théâtre de Provence, and its reputation rests on new productions rather than revivals: directors are given a summer to build something, and a share of the programme is newly commissioned work. It was founded in 1948 on a Mozart repertoire, which it has never abandoned.

The festival runs an academy alongside, training young singers and instrumentalists who then appear in the productions, which is why the casting often precedes a career rather than confirming one.

The organiser estimated around 64,000 spectators in 2025.

July in Aix is hot and the courtyard performances start late. Booking opens the previous autumn with priority for subscribers; Marseille is thirty minutes away and solves the accommodation problem.

PlanningSeasonal window across July; the programme is announced the previous autumn and the good seats go with it.
