The Arena is a first-century Roman amphitheatre in the middle of Verona, and since 1913 it has been an opera house with around 13,000 seats — the largest in regular use anywhere. The repertoire is the grand kind the space demands: Aida, which opened it, Turandot, Carmen, staged with a scale of chorus and set that no indoor house can hold.
The signature moment is the start, when the audience on the stone steps lights small candles and the bowl fills with points of flame.
Fondazione Arena publishes attendance per season; we have not collected a dated figure here.
The stone steps are unreserved and unpadded — cushions are hired at the gate and are not optional. Performances start after dark and run late; rain delays are common and the policy on them is worth reading before booking travel.
PlanningA long summer window of individual nights — book the performance, not the season.
Measured share
The series is not monotonic and is drawn from two agencies: 57% (2024, ANSA), 61% (2025, ANSA), 57% (2026, APA). Not smoothed — three years, two sources, one quantity, and the divergence recorded beside the figure.
