Granted by Emperor Frederick III in 1471, the Herbstmesse is the oldest and largest funfair in Switzerland: rides and stalls across seven squares and sites in Basel for sixteen days, opened at noon on the first Saturday by the ringing of the Messglocke from the Martinskirche.
Its own foods are specific: Mässmogge, a cone-shaped hazelnut sweet, and Rosenküchli.
No attendance figure is collected in this pass.
It is anchored to the Saturday before 30 October. The fair spreads across the city rather than occupying one ground, which is unusual and means it is impossible to avoid rather than impossible to find — the Münsterplatz, Petersplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Kasernenareal all carry parts of it.
