Toledo's Corpus is the most elaborate in Spain. The Custodia de Arfe — a Gothic silver monstrance over three metres high, made in the early sixteenth century and weighing close to two hundred kilos on its carriage — is carried from the cathedral through the old city. The route is hung with Flemish tapestries from the cathedral's own collection, covered with awnings against the sun, and strewn with rosemary and thyme.
The city's streets are dressed the evening before, which is itself worth seeing and far less crowded.
No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.
Corpus Christi falls sixty days after Easter, on a Thursday, and Toledo keeps it on the day rather than moving it to Sunday as most of Spain does. The city is half an hour from Madrid by high-speed train.
