Jerez is the capital of both sherry and the Andalusian horse, and its feria brings the two together in the González Hontoria park: a week of casetas — most of them public, unlike Seville's — with carriage parades and dressage displays each afternoon, and fino and manzanilla rather than rebujito.
The fair has roots in a thirteenth-century cattle market granted by Alfonso X. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, in the town, performs through the year and raises the standard of what is shown.
No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.
Its position in May is set by the regional fair calendar, which itself follows Easter, so the week shifts. The sherry bodegas run visits throughout, which is the reason to come a day early.
