Hogueras de San Juan

Fogueres de Sant Joan

Alicante · Valencian Community · Spain

Alicante builds monuments of the same kind as Valencia's fallas — satirical, enormous, made to burn — plants around ninety of them in the streets on 20 June, and sets fire to all of them at midnight on the twenty-fourth, the feast of Saint John and the solstice. The firefighters then hose the crowd, which is the expected and desired outcome.

The days between run on mascletàs at two in the afternoon in the Plaza de los Luceros and nightly firework contests on the Postiguet beach, which continue for several nights after the burning.

No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.

The dates are fixed at 20–24 June. Note the category distinction from Valencia: Alicante's are bonfires tied to the solstice, Valencia's are a March carpenters' guild tradition — the resemblance is formal rather than historical.

PlanningFixed on 20–24 June, with the cremà at midnight on the twenty-fourth and beach fireworks after.
