The magosto is the Galician and Leonese chestnut feast: fires lit in squares and fields, chestnuts roasted in perforated pans, the year's new wine drunk alongside, and participants smearing each other's faces with the ash — a custom with clearly pre-Christian roots.
Ourense, in the interior of Galicia, is the centre of the chestnut country and holds its magosto alongside an autumn fair.
No attendance figure is published.
The dates cluster around All Saints on 1 November and San Martiño on the eleventh, with village magostos through the month; the October listing is early. Galicia's other autumn draw, the samaín pumpkin tradition, falls in the same week and is genuinely older in that region than the imported Halloween.
Ourense also has free thermal pools along the Miño, which in November is the reason to stay.
PlanningAround All Saints and San Martiño in November — not October, though the season starts then.
