Palio di Feltre

Feltre · Veneto · Italy

Feltre commemorates its 1404 submission to Venice with four days of competition between its four quartieri and the surrounding villages: a crossbow tournament, a goose race, a tug of war and a bareback horse race around the Prato della Fiera. The whole walled town in the Dolomite foothills is dressed for it and several thousand residents take part in the procession.

The modern palio dates from 1979, reviving a much older set of contests.

No attendance figure is published.

It is anchored to the first weekend of August. Feltre's position matters practically: it sits at the mouth of the Dolomites an hour from Belluno, and the first weekend of August is the peak of the Italian mountain holiday, so the valley's accommodation is committed well ahead.

PlanningAnchored to the first weekend of August, in a town that is also a Dolomites base.
