Fiestas del Pilar

Zaragoza · Aragon · Spain

The Ofrenda de Flores on 12 October is the image that defines it: from early morning until late at night, hundreds of thousands of people in regional costume from across Aragon and Spain queue to lay flowers at the Basilica del Pilar, which are built up into a vast floral mantle around a figure of the Virgin in the square. The following day the fruit offering feeds the city's food bank.

Around it run nine days of concerts, jota contests, gigantes, bullfighting and fireworks over the Ebro.

The council publishes figures per edition; we have not collected a dated one here.

The dates sit around 12 October, which is the Spanish national day — so the festival always carries a public holiday and, depending on the weekday, a long bridge. Zaragoza is ninety minutes from both Madrid and Barcelona by high-speed train.
