The sagra is the Italian-Swiss village feast: tables in the street, risotto and polenta cooked in quantity over wood, merlot from the Ticino slopes, and a band. Castagnola, a lakeside quarter of Lugano, holds one of the better-known ones at the end of September.
No attendance figure is published.
The form matters more than the individual event. Ticino's autumn is a continuous series of sagre and grotto evenings across the valleys — chestnut festivals, wine festivals, polenta nights — most of them announced locally weeks ahead and almost none of them on any international calendar.
Lugano is the practical base, forty minutes from Milan on the high-speed line and under three hours from Zurich through the Gotthard base tunnel.
