San Gregorio Armeno is a narrow street in the centre of Naples lined with workshops that make presepe figures all year round, in a tradition formalised in the eighteenth century when the Neapolitan nativity became an art form with court patronage. The scenes are not pious: the Naples presepe includes the tavern, the butcher, the fishmonger and the whole street life of the city, with the holy family somewhere in it.
The modern addition is satirical — footballers, politicians and television figures of the year are modelled in terracotta and sold beside the shepherds, and which celebrities appear is reported as news each December.
No attendance figure applies.
The entry's real correction is that this is a street, not an event. It works all year; from November to Christmas it becomes almost impassable, which is when most listings place it.
PlanningA permanent street of workshops, not a dated festival — the season peaks from November.
