Logroño combines its patronal feast with the Rioja vendimia: the ceremonial treading of the first grapes in the Paseo del Espolón, the offering of the must to the Virgen de Valvanera, and a week of peñas, bullfights, fireworks and very large quantities of wine.
The city's permanent attraction is Calle Laurel and Calle San Juan, a few hundred metres of bars each serving one pincho they have perfected — mushrooms at one, grilled prawn at another — which during San Mateo operate at a scale that has to be seen.
No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.
The dates sit around 21 September. Logroño is small, the Rioja estates are spread across the Ebro valley around it, and the harvest means the wineries are working rather than hosting.
PlanningFixed around 21 September, the feast of Saint Matthew — the harvest is the reason for the date.
