Horses race on the frozen Lake of St. Moritz on three consecutive Sundays, in flat races, trotting races and the skikjöring — in which a skier is towed behind a riderless horse at speed, a discipline that exists only here and has its own world championship.
Racing on this lake dates from 1907.
No attendance figure is collected in this pass.
As with the polo, the event stands or falls on ice thickness, which is measured and published before each meeting and has forced cancellation in warm winters. It is the clearest example in this atlas of a festival whose recurrence class is sound but whose existence is conditional on something the calendar cannot express.
PlanningAnchored to the first three Sundays of February, and conditional on measured ice thickness.
