Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Almagro

Festival de Almagro

Almagro · Castile-La Mancha · Spain

Almagro's Corral de Comedias is the only Spanish courtyard playhouse of the seventeenth century to survive intact — it was walled up and forgotten for two centuries, which is why. The festival performs the Golden Age repertoire in it: Lope de Vega, Calderón, Tirso de Molina, before an audience of a few hundred in a space those plays were written for.

The programme spills into cloisters, palaces and a modern theatre across the town.

No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.

The month is July, and it is sometimes listed in June. Almagro is a La Mancha town of 9,000 with an arcaded green-painted plaza and very little accommodation; Ciudad Real is half an hour away, and summer nights on the Meseta are the compensation for forty-degree afternoons.

PlanningJuly, not June — a three-week season of separate evenings in a town of 9,000.
