The Lyon Biennale has used the city's industrial remains as its principal asset since 1991, most recently the vast Usines Fagor in Gerland, alongside the Musée d'Art Contemporain. A guest curator is appointed for each edition and given the run of the sites, which produces editions of markedly different character.
The organiser reported 285,000 visitors for the most recent edition, in 2024.
Two things confuse planning. First, the cycle: the art biennale runs in odd years, and the Biennale de la Danse — a separate and equally serious event — occupies the even years, so Lyon has a biennale every year but not the same one. Second, the duration: the exhibition runs for roughly four months from September, which means there is no reason to attend in the crowded opening week unless the professional programme is the point.
PlanningBiennial and long-running — several months, not a weekend. The dance biennale alternates with it in even years.
