The Bigouden coiffe is the tallest headdress in Brittany — a column of starched lace some thirty centimetres high, which grew steadily through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is now worn only by a dwindling number of older women and by the dance groups. The Fête des Brodeuses exists to keep the embroidery itself alive: the gold-thread work on waistcoats and aprons that the region's workshops still produce.
The weekend runs competitions, workshops and a Sunday parade of cercles celtiques from across the Pays Bigouden, with bagadoù playing.
No attendance figure is published.
It is anchored to the second Sunday of July. Pont-l'Abbé is a small town in a corner of Finistère well served by nothing; the practical base is Quimper, twenty minutes away, and the Sunday parade is the whole point of going.
