Fiesta des Suds

Marseille · Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur · France

The Fiesta des Suds is held at the Dock des Suds, a converted goods warehouse in the Joliette docks north of the Vieux-Port, and programmes the music of the Mediterranean rim and its diasporas — raï, gnawa, Balkan brass, Latin, and the Marseille rap scene that has its own claim on the city.

Founded in 1992, it was one of the events that began reading Marseille as a Mediterranean capital rather than a French port, a reading the city has since adopted officially.

No attendance figure is published by the organiser, so we record none.

Its October slot is deliberate: the summer circuit is over, the touring costs are lower, and the audience is local rather than holidaying. The Joliette district has been rebuilt around the Docks and the MuCEM, and is now straightforwardly reachable by métro and tram, which was not true when the festival started.

PlanningSeasonal window in October, after the summer festival circuit has closed.
