Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival

弘前さくらまつり

Hirosaki · Aomori · Japan

Hirosaki Park holds around 2,600 cherry trees around the moats of a surviving Edo castle, and they are pruned using techniques developed for the apple orchards Aomori is known for — which produces a density of blossom per branch not seen further south, and trees that have lived far longer than the usual sixty years.

The set piece is the hanaikada, the carpet of fallen petals covering the moat so completely that the water disappears.

No attendance figure is collected in this pass.

The dates are published in advance and the bloom is not. Because Hirosaki is three weeks behind Tokyo, it is also the fallback for anyone who missed the southern front — the one case where the blossom's movement works in a traveller's favour.

PlanningA late-April window timed to the northern bloom — three weeks after Tokyo's.
