Fuji is climbable only in the official season, when the huts are staffed, the trails are cleared of snow and the mountain weather is survivable for ordinary walkers — roughly early July to early September, with the four trails opening and closing on slightly different dates.
Several hundred thousand people climb it each season, most of them overnight to reach the summit for sunrise.
No attendance figure is collected in this pass; Yamanashi and Shizuoka publish climber counts.
Recent seasons have introduced an entry fee, a nightly cap on the Yoshida trail and a gate closed overnight to stop "bullet climbing" — ascending without sleeping, which produces most of the rescues.
The opening ceremony at the Fuji Sengen shrine on 1 July is the entry the partner calendar carries; the season is the thing that matters.
PlanningA two-month window, roughly 1 July to 10 September — and the trails now charge and cap numbers.
