The almonds flower in south-western Sicily in late winter, and Agrigento built a festival around it in 1937: folk groups from around the world perform among the Greek temples of the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO site, with the blossom out and the sea behind. There is an international folklore competition, a parade of Sicilian carts, and the lighting of a brazier at the Temple of Concordia.
No attendance figure is published.
The planning difficulty is the same as for any blossom event: the flowering is a seasonal window and can run a fortnight either side. The festival dates are set in advance and do not always coincide with the peak.
Agrigento is not well served by rail; the practical approach is to drive from Palermo or Catania, both around two hours.
PlanningA seasonal window tied to the blossom, which can run early or late by a fortnight.
