Jazz reached Japan through Kobe — the first professional Japanese jazz bands played in the port's dance halls in the 1920s, on ships and for the foreign community in the Kitano district. Kobe Jazz Street, running since 1982, keeps to the traditional and mainstream end and uses the churches, hotels and small clubs of Kitano as its venues.
