Moon and Stars puts international pop and rock headliners in the Piazza Grande at Locarno, the arcaded square in Italian-speaking Ticino that holds around 8,000 standing, for around ten nights in July.
No attendance figure is collected in this pass.
The square's other tenant is the Locarno Film Festival, which erects a screen on the same ground in August. For a town of 16,000 that is two large events in six weeks, and the Piazza Grande spends most of the summer under construction or under a stage.
Locarno sits on Lago Maggiore with a subtropical microclimate — palms, camellias, and the warmest summer temperatures in Switzerland — which is why both events are outdoors and after dark.
