Giostra della Quintana di Ascoli Piceno
Ascoli Piceno · Marche · Italy
Ascoli Piceno's six sestieri each send a knight to charge an armoured figure of a Moor holding a shield; a strike must be clean or the arm swings back. The joust is run twice, on the first Sunday of July by night and the first Sunday of August by day, and is preceded by a procession of around 1,500 people in fifteenth-century costume through a city built almost entirely of travertine.
The statutes governing it date from 1377.
No attendance figure is published.
The listing point worth fixing: this is the Ascoli Quintana, distinct from Foligno's in region, date, costume period and format. Ascoli is in the Marche, inland from San Benedetto del Tronto, and has limited accommodation for joust weekends.
PlanningTwo jousts, July and August — and a separate institution from the Quintana at Foligno.
