مهرجان رأس الخيمة للفنون
Ras Al Khaimah · United Arab Emirates
The RAK art festival has repeatedly used Al Jazirah Al Hamra, a coral-block pearling village abandoned in the 1960s when its inhabitants left for Abu Dhabi, as its venue: installations in roofless houses, a mosque and a souk that the Gulf has been eroding for sixty years.
No attendance figure is collected in this pass.
It is the only substantial contemporary art programme in the northern emirates and it is free.
The venue is the argument for going. Al Jazirah Al Hamra is the last intact pre-oil pearling settlement on the Gulf coast, and the festival is the main occasion on which it is lit, open and populated.
