Ramatuelle is a hill village in the Var, above the beaches of Pampelonne and a few kilometres from Saint-Tropez. Its festival, founded in 1985 in memory of the actor Gérard Philipe who is buried there, plays in a purpose-built open-air theatre on the edge of the village: a programme of French theatre with well-known casts, plus a jazz strand.
No attendance figure is published.
The real planning problem is the road. Early August on the Saint-Tropez peninsula produces some of the worst traffic in France, and the single road up to Ramatuelle is a narrow climb. Performances begin at nine thirty in the evening, which is deliberate — it puts the audience on the road after the beach traffic has cleared, but the return is still slow.
Parking is in organised fields below the village with a shuttle.
PlanningA ten-day window in early August, at the absolute peak of the Var's summer traffic.
