Sagra del Redentore

Nuoro · Sardinia · Italy

A bronze Redeemer was placed on the summit of Monte Ortobene above Nuoro in 1901, and the festival grew around the annual procession to it on 29 August. What draws visitors is the Sunday before: a parade of several thousand people in the costume of the Barbagia and the rest of Sardinia, with launeddas players and folk groups, through a town that is the island's literary capital — Grazia Deledda, the Nobel laureate, was born here.

No attendance figure is published.

The inland position matters. Most Sardinian festivals a visitor encounters are coastal; Nuoro is in the mountainous centre, two hours from either coast, and the costume there is the least diluted on the island.

The dates are anchored to the last Sunday of August, with the religious procession fixed on the twenty-ninth.
