The Sferisterio was built in the 1820s by a hundred Macerata families for pallone col bracciale, a ball game played against a long wall. The wall gives it a stage close to ninety metres wide and an acoustic in which an unamplified voice carries cleanly to the back — the reason opera moved in from 1921 and never left.
The shape dictates the stagings: productions are built laterally, and directors treat the width as the central problem.
No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.
The season runs July into August with a handful of productions. Macerata is a hill town in the Marche with modest accommodation; the Adriatic coast at Civitanova is twenty-five minutes away and is where most of the audience sleeps.
PlanningA July–August window; the venue was built for a ball game, not for opera, and seats about 2,500.
