The professional sumo year is six fifteen-day tournaments on a fixed rotation of cities, each beginning on a Sunday and ending on a Sunday. Three are in Tokyo at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan; the others are in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
The Japan Sumo Association publishes attendance per tournament; we have not collected a dated one.
This entry exists because the partner calendar lists the January Tokyo tournament as a single January event, which is how almost every festival calendar handles sumo. The consequence for a reader is real: a visitor in Osaka in March or Fukuoka in November is within walking distance of a grand tournament and will not find it on the page.
We record the six as runnings under one entry rather than as six entries, because they are one competition with one ranking — the same reasoning the partner applied to the Palio di Siena.
PlanningSix tournaments, not one: Tokyo in January, May and September; Osaka in March, Nagoya in July, Fukuoka in November.
