Giacomo Puccini built a villa on the shore of the Lago di Massaciuccoli at Torre del Lago and wrote most of his mature work there; he is buried in the house. The festival, running since 1930, performs his operas in an open-air theatre on the lakeside a few hundred metres away, which means Tosca and La Bohème are heard within sight of the window they were composed at.
No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.
The season spans July and August as separate evenings rather than a concentrated run.
Torre del Lago is a few kilometres from Viareggio on the Versilia coast, which supplies the accommodation. Performances are outdoors beside a lake in high summer; mosquitoes are a genuine and widely attested feature of the experience.
PlanningJuly and August, not June — an open-air season of individual nights.
