Giffoni's premise, unchanged since 1971, is that the jury is made up of children and teenagers. Several thousand jurors, organised into age bands from three to over eighteen, watch the films, question the directors, and vote. Truffaut's remark that it is the most necessary festival of all is quoted on everything the organisation prints, and reasonably.
Juror places are applied for in advance and allocated by age group; families travel from across Italy and abroad.
No attendance figure is recorded here in this pass.
The month is July, although it is sometimes listed in June. Giffoni Valle Piana is a small town inland from Salerno with little accommodation of its own — Salerno and the Cilento coast absorb the audience, half an hour away.
PlanningJuly, not June. Juror places are applied for months ahead by age band.
