Founded in 2008, the Napoli Teatro Festival programmes Italian and international theatre, dance and performance across a shifting map of the city: the court theatre inside the Palazzo Reale, the Teatro San Ferdinando, the Albergo dei Poveri, and industrial spaces in the eastern districts. A substantial share of the programme is newly commissioned, often in dialect or working with Neapolitan writers.

The venue spread is the planning issue. Performances are scattered across a city whose public transport is uneven after dark, and two shows on one evening is rarely realistic.
The window runs through June into early July, which is before the August closure when Naples empties, and the festival is one of the reasons the city's cultural season now extends into the summer at all.
